10 Best Malls To Visit in Riyadh: Expat’s Guide

Best Malls to Visit & Mall Culture in Riyadh

If you are wondering what the common weekend activities are for people in Riyadh, the answer usually depends entirely on the season.

During summer, outdoor activities are very limited because the heat is almost unbearable.

People just spend their time indoors and avoid the sun at all costs. Naturally, this means we all end up at the malls.

But during winter, the dynamic changes completely. Everyone tries their best to spend as much time outdoors as they can.

While we don’t exactly have forests or farmers markets to spend time at, we make do with what we have.

Families schedule regular picnics or “kishtah” in the desert, and parks fill up with people walking and running.

However, even with the nice weather, mall culture is the heartbeat of this city. It is essentially an like an indoor city.

Because of the heat, the mall functions as our park, our town square, and our gym and children’s playground combined.

I don’t think I have ever gone to malls as much in my life as I do now that I live in Riyadh.

It is just where life happens here. In the mornings, you’ll actually see groups of people walking, often older men or women in abayas getting their exercise in before the crowds arrive.

If you look closely, you’ll see the their running sneakers!

I also realized quickly that coffee shops here are the primary meeting spots for socializing and business, much like bars would be in the West.

It’s where you go to catch up, work, or just people-watching.

After living here for a year, I started to notice how different malls have their own unique perks.

Malls Opening Hours During Ramadan

Before I jump into my favorites, I have to mention how wild the mall opening hours is during Ramadan.

If you are in Riyadh during the Holy Month, throw your normal schedule out the window because you have to experience this!

During the day, the malls are basically dead. But after sunset, they come alive and stay open until 2:00 AM or even 3:00 AM.

You will see that people started entering the malls at 11 PM right after they finish the Taraweh prayers (Taraweh is extra night prayers performed only during Ramadan).

The vibe is honestly magical. You’ll see beautiful lights and lanterns hanging everywhere, and the smell of oud incense is intense in the best way possible.

Some malls like often set up Ramadan bazaars selling traditional clothes, food, perfume and other stuff.

And a funny quirk: the food courts are packed at 1 AM for Suhoor (the pre-dawn meal) rather than lunch. It’s an experience you have to see to believe.

Top 10 Best Malls to Explore in Riyadh

Riyadh Park

This is easily one of my favorite malls in Riyadh. Riyadh Park has a lot of luxury outlets, and I found a few great places to eat.

If you’re a fan of The Cheesecake Factory and PF Chang’s, good news, they have both here! But my favorite eateries are actually located on their 2nd floor.

The first one is Asian Hub, an authentic Asian restaurant, and right next to it is my absolute favorite place, Zalata. It is an Egyptian spot that is often filled with locals.

One tip to know whether a place is good or not: you have to see the amount of locals (look for the white thobes and black abayas) inside.

I was first attracted to come into Zalata because of the crowd, and I never regretted it. Riyadh Park also has a couple of coffee shops.

I’ve been here with my husband and with a friend, and it’s the perfect outing with your friends and family.

The only downside is the parking.

On the weekend, it often gets really full after 3 PM, so try to go a bit early or just take an Uber (make sure you have the best e-hailing apps downloaded)

Riyadh Gallery

Riyadh Gallery holds a special place in my heart.

The highlight of the mall is definitely the artificial river and fountain right in the center of the ground floor.

It has a fantastic food court filled with Asian eateries, and the prices are very affordable compared to other malls in the city.

There are a lot of coffee shops lining the water, so when you sit down, it almost feels like you are drinking coffee on a riverbank.

It also feels much less chaotic than Riyadh Park, which makes it a great option for families who want a calmer vibe.

My personal ritual is going to Barns. They have a perfect seating area right facing the fountain.

This is exactly where my husband and I go to unwind after a long week of working.

Solitaire

This is one of the newly opened malls in Riyadh.

It is designed to be ultra-luxurious. The architecture looks like geode stones, and it is absolutely stunning at night.

They also have an open roof concept.

During the summer, it might not be the best place to spend time because of the heat. But in winter, this is a perfect spot!

This isn’t really the place you go for quick errands.

It’s where you go when you want to dress up and have a fancy date with your partner.

It has some incredible high-end dining options, so it’s perfect if you want to feel a bit fancy.

Just be prepared that the price tag here matches the vibe!

Park Avenue Mall

I probably visit this mall the most, especially in the winter, since it is so close to where I live.

It isn’t a massive mall, but it is new and has a unique layout that I really love.

The highlight is definitely the fantastic outdoor terrace lined with cafes and restaurants.

During the winter months, the area comes alive with booths and bazaars selling everything from winter jackets and oud to perfumes.

I love coming here at night (you probably can tell I’ve fully adapted to the Saudi lifestyle) just to soak in the atmosphere of families enjoying their time together.

But the real hidden gems are actually inside.

There are a few underrated abaya stores here that sell high-quality Saudi abayas at surprisingly affordable prices.

Didn’t regret doing my abaya shopping here!

I actually found one for just 150 SAR, which is an absolute steal for that quality!

Aside from fashion, they also have excellent perfume booths. My husband and I always come here when we need to find nice gifts for our friends back home.

Nakheel Mall

Your life as an expat in Riyadh isn’t complete until you’ve been to Nakheel Mall.

This place is massive. They recently expanded it with a luxury wing and a new cinema, making it even better.

I have a bit of a love-hate relationship with this place.

I love that I can find every single brand imaginable here, from furniture to fashion.

Unlike most malls that build up, Nakheel Mall is mostly spread out on one huge level. Because of that, walking from one end to the other is a workout in itself.

It is the best option if you have a long shopping list and want to get everything done in one trip, just make sure to wear comfortable shoes!

They are also famous for organizing major events. I’ve even heard about a few international celebrities making appearances here during special seasons.

Tala Mall

Tala Mall isn’t huge, so people usually come here for a specific purpose rather than just to hang out.

In our case, we go solely to the cinema.

They have a beautifully decorated theater with surprisingly good prices compared to the bigger luxury malls.

I also noticed they have a small booth called “Mamma Bunz.”

If you’ve ever tried Papparoti in the UAE, it’s exactly like that—warm, coffee-coated buns with butter inside. My husband and I are obsessed with them!

Since MammaBunz has a few branches all over Riyadh, this one is at Granada Mall.

While the mall might not be massive, it is still worth exploring.

They have plenty of great shops, including a Sephora, so you can still get your shopping fix without the crazy crowds.

ROSHN Front

Roshn Front is quite unique because it doesn’t look like a typical mall.

You won’t find a huge enclosed building with endless retail stores here.

Instead, it is an open-air complex that focuses mostly on cafes, restaurants, and wide walking areas.

For me, it is the perfect place to go on a date! Some of the cafes are actually built right over the artificial rivers and fountains, which gives a lovely atmosphere.

However, I would strictly avoid going during peak summer. It gets unbearably hot, and you will just end up getting grumpy and angry at your partner.

In the winter, this place is absolutely glorious.

I actually came here during Saudi National Day just to experience the vibe. It was incredibly crowded, but worth it for a first-time experience (though I probably wouldn’t do it again!).

Granada Mall

I’ve been to Granada Mall a few times. They do have a solid selection of stores inside.

A friend actually introduced me to a great home essentials shop here called “Nice” (yes, that is the actual name!)

It’s definitely worth checking out if you need things for your apartment.

The main mall feels a bit older and doesn’t feel very lively to me.

They recently added a modern expansion wing, but it still feels a bit empty with not many shops open there yet.

However, right next door is the Granada Square,  which is an outdoor extension with some really good dining options.

You can even find The Cheesecake Factory here if you are craving a big American meal and delicious cakes (am a fan of their Linda’s Fudge Cake)

Via Riyadh

I haven’t actually made it here yet, but it is at the very top of my to-visit list for a special occasion.

From what everyone says, this isn’t a mall in the traditional sense.

It is a masterpiece of “Salmani” architecture, designed with local stone to look incredibly modern yet traditional.

It is filled with world-famous restaurants and is even home to the St. Regis hotel.

They also have a cinema that is supposed to be the ultimate luxury experience, where they serve you full gourmet meals right at your seat.

Since the brands here are incredibly exclusive (think ultra-luxury), I probably won’t be doing my casual shopping here.

But if you want to impress a guest or celebrate a big anniversary, spots like Spago is apparently the places to be.

The parking fee at VIA Riyadh is SAR 50 for the first hour and SAR 10 for the following hour.

Panorama Mall

I haven’t had the chance to visit Panorama Mall yet, but it is definitely on my list.

You can recognize it immediately by its huge curved glass facade right on the corner of Tahlia and Takhassusi Street.

Everyone keeps telling me that the Danube supermarket here is massive.

Apparently, it is the place to go if you are looking for specific imported American snacks that you can’t find elsewhere.

From what I’ve heard, the layout is very spacious with wide corridors, so it doesn’t feel as cramped as other malls even when it’s busy.

Since it sits right in the middle of the city, it seems like the perfect meeting point for catching up with friends who live in different parts of Riyadh.

Entertainment Beyond Shopping

One thing I’ve noticed is that these malls aren’t just for spending money on clothes. If you have kids or just want to have fun, the options are honestly endless.

The cinemas here, like VOX and Muvi, are lightyears ahead of what I was used to back home. We’re talking waiter service and super comfy reclining seats.

For families, you’ll see specific Kid Zones everywhere. Places like arcade and indoor theme parks (yes, with water slides!) are hugely popular here.

After a while, it makes so much sense to me. Since kids can’t play in the park when it’s 45 degrees, these indoor zones become their playground.

For the older crowds (or just us adults acting like kids), there are a lot of bowling alleys perfect for a weekend hangout.

Sales Seasons & Best Times to Shop in Saudi Arabia

Finally, if you love a good bargain (who doesn’t?), you need to mark your calendar. The sales here can be pretty intense.

  • Saudi National Day (Sept 23): This is massive. Almost every brand has a sale.
  • Founding Day (Feb 22): Another huge period for discounts.
  • White Friday: This is the Saudi version of Black Friday in November. If you can wait to make big purchases, definitely aim for these dates!

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) About Riyadh Malls

How much does parking cost at Riyadh malls?

Most of the mall parking is completely free. However, finding a spot can be a challenge during weekends (Thursday and Friday nights). If you don’t mind paying, you can opt for the valet parking.

What is the dress code for malls in Riyadh?

You can wear whatever feels comfortable, as long as it’s modest. For women, this means covering your chest, shoulders, and knees.

For men, it’s safer to stick to long trousers or jeans instead of shorts. You’ll still see people wearing shorts here and there, but if you’re new to Riyadh, it’s best to avoid them to stay on the safe side.

Many female expats like to throw on a light, open abaya over their clothes—it’s comfortable and the easiest modesty hack.

When is the best time to visit malls to avoid crowds?

If you prefer to go outside the peak hours, 10:00AM – 2.00 PM often is the best time even on the weekend.

Friday evenings (after 7:00 PM) are the busiest times of the week. This is prime “family time,” and food courts will be packed.

While shops no longer legally have to close during prayer times, many smaller boutiques or kiosks might still take a brief 15-minute break.

Are Riyadh malls safe for solo female travelers?

Absolutely. Riyadh is one of the safest cities globally. Malls are highly secure with security guards at every entrance and cameras throughout the complex.

You will frequently see women shopping, dining, and walking alone or in groups until late at night without any issues.

Do malls in Riyadh have Wi-Fi?

Yes, most malls offer free public Wi-Fi. You usually need a Saudi mobile number to receive an SMS code to log in.

If you are a tourist, getting a local SIM card (STC, Mobily, or Zain) at the airport is highly recommended to access these services easily.
