If you are a remote worker, you’re gonna love the coworking scene in Riyadh.

I admit that working from home as an expat in a new country can get lonely and sometimes makes you feel like you’re in your own bubble all day long. 

I would rather work from the coffee shop, but sometimes finding a power outlet can be tough.

Plus, using mobile data for hours isn’t cheap, especially since many cafes in Riyadh don’t provide public Wi-Fi. So, co working space it is!

The great news is that Riyadh’s coworking scene is variety.

You can choose a space in a fancy office in a glass skyscraper building or somewhere more quiet with a smell of coffee. Either way, there’s a spot for you.

Saudi Arabia has some of the fastest 5G speeds in the world, and outperforming the Wi-Fi in many European capitals.

But, relying solely on public Wi-Fi can be risky for security and stability. If you are new to the city, get yourself a SIM card immediately.

STC generally offers the widest coverage, especially if you plan to take weekend trips to the desert.

My advice is, always have a mobile hotspot ready. Coworking spaces usually have fiber-optic connections.

Getting Around in Riyadh

Riyadh is a sprawling city, and traffic can be intense during peak hours (8:00 AM – 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM) and e-hailing will be expensive during these hour.

Choosing a coworking space near your residence is a strategic move to save hours of your life.

The newly launched metro lines are a game-changer. Spaces located near KAFD or Olaya are now more accessible than ever.

You can check the nearest station to your chosen coworking hub before signing a lease.

E-hailing app like Uber, Careem, and Bolt are very safe and reliable here. I’ve used them and haven’t had bad experience yet in terms of safety.

Language barrier can be a thing here, but most drivers will try their best to deliver good services regardless.

• The vibe is strictly corporate and premium. It’s less “beanbags and hoodies” and more “suits and espressos.”

Work-Friendly Cafes in Riyadh: Cacti

This is my go-to coffee shop when I want to “work from anywhere.”

The atmosphere here is airy and spacious. It covers two floors and has huge windows. These windows let in plenty of natural light, which helps keep your energy up.

The “cactus” theme adds a nice touch of greenery that feels refreshing compared to standard sterile offices.

They serve excellent Ethiopian blends. If you have a sweet tooth please try their Honey Cake or Tiramisu.

Work-Friendly Cafes in Riyadh: Sophia

I found this place on Google and didn’t regret coming here at all!

Sophia Riyadh is a hidden gem that functions more as a library cafe than a standard coffee shop.

Their design featuring floor-to-ceiling bookshelves and they offer dedicated desks that you can rent by the hour to focus on your work.

The atmosphere is studious yet social, you’ll find a mix of people deep in work, students studying, and friends catching up.

It’s perfect if you want to network or co-work with friends without the noise of a busy espresso bar.

Networking in Riyadh: Tips for Expats

Coworking spaces are a great start to networking if you’re new in Riyadh. However, networking in Saudi Arabia works slightly differently than in the West. Here is how to make the most of your new workspace connections.

Coffee Culture in Saudi Arabia

In Saudi culture, most relationships connect over coffee (Gahwa) instead of liquor. If a fellow coworker offers you coffee or dates, accept them.

It is a gesture of hospitality and a great icebreaker. Turning it down can sometimes be seen as cold or polite refusal of friendship.

Dress Code in Saudi Arabia

While many coworking spaces have a smart casual environment, Riyadh is still a conservative city compared to Western hubs.

For men, shorts are generally a no-go in professional settings like. Stick to chinos or jeans and a collared shirt.

For women, wearing an abaya is no longer mandatory, but modest clothing is still expected. Loose-fitting trousers and tops with sleeves work well.

Many expat women wear their usual dresses or blouses and layer a loose abaya over them. It looks elegant and honestly gives off a bit of a princess vibe if you ask me.

Greetings and Culture in Saudi Arabia

Saudis are mostly hospitable and friendly towards expats. Don’t be afraid to say “Hello” or “Salam Alaykum” (Peace be upon you) when entering a shared office or elevator.

It’s a common greeting and is often appreciated, it helps break the ice and shows respect. Just keep in mind that greetings are strictly exchanged with people of the same gender only.

My final thoughts

After a year living in Riyadh, I personally prefer to make my home office as comfy as possible. This way, I could reduce my expenses from eating out or paying for a monthly coworking space.

But having a coworking space membership can still be useful especially if your work requires you to meet clients. It’s best to have a dedicated space for you to conduct your meeting.
